Cape House - Suffolk Park

A modern house with wooden siding and large glass windows, featuring a spacious balcony with outdoor furniture, surrounded by trees and greenery during sunset. Cape House, Suffolk Park – architectural photography

Cape House is a coastal residence in Suffolk Park inspired by the geological formations found along Australia’s eastern coastline. Designed by Aphora Architecture and built by Coakers Building, the home is positioned to shield from prevailing southerly winds while opening toward elevated views across the Pacific Ocean toward Cape Byron Lighthouse.

Passive design plays a central role in the home. Masonry provides thermal mass, while large operable glazing allows for natural airflow and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.

The material palette draws from the local environment. Basalt references the nearby headlands of Broken Head and Cape Byron, while spotted gum timber reflects the eucalypts that line the east coast. Deep green stone elements reflect the tones of the coastal rainforest surrounding the site.

The photography focuses on the relationship between architecture, natural morning light and the coastal landscape, capturing the textures and passive design details that shape the experience of the house.
