Garron Tower - Double Bay

Sydney Art Deco on 35mm

Garron Tower is a 1940s Art Deco apartment building positioned on the edge of Sydney Harbour in Double Bay.

Defined by its curved brick façade, rounded balconies and waterfront position, the building sits directly above Murray Rose Pool, looking out across the harbour.

Photographed on 35mm film in the late afternoon, the series moves between architectural details and wider views of the building within its surroundings. The boardwalk, neighbouring apartments and harbour become part of the story, showing Garron Tower as part of the wider Double Bay landscape.

There was something particularly timeless about the scene that afternoon. Boats sat across the bay while swimmers made the most of the winter sun below, bringing life to the waterfront around the building.

The low winter light brings out the warmth and texture of the original brickwork, while the grain and slightly faded tones of 35mm give the photographs a nostalgic quality. Alongside the older boats and Art Deco architecture, parts of the series feel as though they could have been photographed decades earlier.
