Baloney’s Deli is Byron Bay’s answer to the classic New York Italian sandwich shop. Classy, nostalgic and unmistakably old-school, the space feels like stepping into another era of deli culture where simple food done properly is the whole point.

Owner and chef George built Baloney’s around a straightforward philosophy: do the classics well. The menu leans into iconic deli staples such as Gabagool, Pastrami on Rye, cold cuts stacked on focaccia, strong espresso, fresh orange juice and house cannoli.

The interior was designed to reflect that same timeless approach. Espresso-brown and golden crema tiles set the tone alongside black and white checkered flooring, dark wood finishes and an open deli fridge stacked with meats and cheeses. The space also features a $2 standing espresso bar, a nod to traditional Italian cafés where a quick shot of coffee is part of daily life.

Photographing Baloney’s was about capturing both the food and the atmosphere of the space. The focus was on natural light, texture and small details that make the deli feel authentic. Wide interior frames highlight the character of the fit-out while tighter images focus on the stacked sandwiches, espresso moments and deli counter details.

The goal was to create imagery that feels cinematic and nostalgic while still showcasing the food clearly. The result is a set of images that reflect the personality of the deli and the experience of stepping inside.

Baloney’s feels like a small slice of New York dropped into Byron Bay. Walk through the door and you might feel like you’ve landed somewhere between Little Italy and Satriale’s Pork Store.
